:() Muppet Disco Thief

I found Jadene on Tribe.net in 2004. I think she may have been advertising that she made hats, I can't remember. She made me a sparkly black hat with ears that I LOVE.

2007 - my roommate and his girlfriend were planning on going to Burning Man, and I wanted to get hem cute matching ear hats for Christmas. I got in touch with Jadene, and she said she could make them, for $60. I sent her the money, and got the shoddiest looking hats back in return - a FULL 2 months late!! So I sent them back in February, and she ignored my emails until JUNE and then said she didn't have the material I wanted, and she wasn't going to refund me. Since then she has insulted me, and berated me for simply asking for my money back as I have NOTHING to show for the $60 I sent her.

Here is some of our email exchange. As you can see, she is completely unwilling to refund me money or even admit that I ordered those hats in November and this was still going on in JUNE!

i don't offer refunds. you asked me to remake the hats again for you, and that is what i agreed to do. i originally did make and send you two hats. i still have them in the box in which you returned them. if you no longer want me to remake the hats and now also don't wish to procure the perfect fabric you asked me to remake the original hats with, as per our last several interchanges, then i would be happy to resend the original hats that i made back to you.

Hi Jane,

Actually, I don't want the hats anymore. I have paid you $60, I have nothing to show for it - and I would appreciate receiving my money back as soon as possible.

Best,
Katie

Hi Jane,

I can only hope to convey to you that I do not mean to "tell on you" in any way or fashion - I just want the freakin' hats! I'm sort of just really disappointed and trying to find out what the hold up is. At this point, my friends think its all a waste of time and they're the ones that suggested I ask for the $ back. Perhaps a better approach may have been conveying to me *from the start* that you no longer make hats - that way, properly informed, I could have made a better decision. But now that we're already on this path - help *me* believe in *you*!

I don't know if I can find the fabric, but maybe I can. Are you honestly having a difficult time finding the proper fabric in Portland. Really all I crave is some honesty - are you super busy with other shite? Do you not have your heart in hats anymore? Just help me figure out how to move this forward with our rapport in tact as much as possible :o) If me finding fabric will aide you, I'm more than willing to go that direction.

I wish you all the best.

Cheers,
Katie

Katie,
If you know where to get the exact kind of fabric that you asked me to find, please do send it along, so I can make your hats exactly how you want them and send them to you.
As for reporting me and whatnot, I feel that I have never once lied to or cheated you, so your approach seems unnecessary. I don't make hats that much anymore at all, but if you feel you need to 'tell on me' I recognize that there is nothing I can do to stop that except to try to reason with you a bit, especially if you think yelping will help you in some way.
I will return any unused fabric with the completed hats, too.

Hi Jadene,

I apologize if my message came across to you like that - I hope you can understand where I am coming from. My seemingly negative attitude is simply a reaction to the situation at hand: namely that I bought hats from you for a lot of money and I have nothing to show for it. The hats you sent me did not even fit our heads, so I'm not sure how I was expected to like them if they weren't wearable? I live on Haight Street and could have bought some ear hats there, but I wanted to send money to an actual person and get something special.

I'm not threatening you in the slightest, I just think if you're representing yourself as a maker of hats, people should know what they're in for (ie poor quality hats and a year long wait). We have Yelp.com here in the city and it is great for that purpose. Recently, a friend of mine fell ill from food poisoning, and through yelp.com he was able to tell his story and get refunded.

I only wish I could say something more positive to you - I really really liked my first hat and was just hoping to get 2 more as Christmas presents for my friends/roommates. I look forward to getting the hats when you find the time to make them and send them. Perhaps, I could find the amount of fabric you need in the color/material I like and you could then send some money back with the hats?

Thanks for your response,
Katie

i'm sorry that you feel you have to threaten me with public scolding, but i sent your original hats and you didn't like them. i don't have any money to send you, so it is not a matter worth your negative attitude; i said i would find the specific fabric you requested and make you new hats in time for burning man, and that is still what you can expect me to do.

Hi Jadene,

Just wondering what the story is with the hats. If you haven't gotten the fur, would it be possible to just get the $60 back? I really need the $ right now and am kinda tired of waiting - it's been 6 months :)

Best,
Katie

I understand. I will find look for some new olive/dark green/sparkle fabric, but it would be nice to have the hats I did make returned, so I can not only gage the correct 'depth' of your noggin but also possibly resell them as kids hats.
Thank you,
Jadene

Go ahead and send me the hats, including your original one, so I can see how "deep" your head is. That sounds funny, but anyway, I'm sure you know what I'm trying to say. It will also help me to feel the 'hand' of the fabric when shopping for the right fabric for your hats.

Hi Jadene,

Awesome! That is great news. Let's see - the hats are for Burning Man, but it would be great if my friends could wear them this winter in SF as well. That being said, the right fabric is important so don't feel rushed.
I think if we can stay somewhat olive/dark green that would be great. A sparkle or something similar is ok and prob nice for playa spice. We're definitely more into the hat being a full, over the ear super cute hat like the original one I have (and love!). If you find another color that is *perfect* shoot me an email and I'll make sure its not some color that my friends hate.

Do you want the other hats back?

Thanks
Katie

katie,
i can make you some new hats that are deeper. i'll have to do some looking for green fur that is stretchy like the sparkly black of your original hat. because finding the fabric you want will take some time, if you can tell me what kind of leeway i get to have in choosing color and pattern, that would make it easier for me to procure something stretchy and still fabulous. i.e. do you still want green and how particular are you about the specific look of the fur as long as it is stretchy?

Hi Jadene,

Thank you for making the hats that I ordered and sending them to me. I received them a bit after the New Year started, and was excited to give them to my friends. Unfortunately, they don't seem to look at all like the hat you originally made me. The brim is very large, and the hats are quite small. My hat goes over my ears which is one of the best parts, and these hats barely fit on my very small head. Also, the ears are different. I do like the inside lining idea, although I think the material used is what makes the hats far too small? The material used on my original ear hat is awesome - super stretchy and comfy and soft, although I have had it for a few years now and it is very well loved. My friends were most excited about the fact the hats would fit over their ears, as it is quite cold in San Francisco.

I have attached some pictures to help show you what I mean.

I'm really hoping that I can get 2 new hats made that are much more like the original hat. I am happy to send these back to you for use in another project - maybe if you made the brim smaller, they could be as children sized hats.

Please let me know if you'd need new measurements or anything for new hats.

Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon. Please call me if that will help you sort out what I mean.

Hi Jadene,

Thanks for following up. I'd like to get those two hats in the dark green brim style. If you can get started that would be fantastic, I'll send you the $ today to the address you've supplied me. I'm hoping to have these for my friends around the holidays, but understand if they can't get her by xmas. Would you happen to have an estimated arrival time for them if you started today?

Thanks so much

As you can see, I tried my best to be understanding, but I guess with some people they can't see past their own issues and try to project on other people. Jadene - give me my money back!
